Fernanda Durand

Fernanda Durand is the Chief Marketing Consultant for the National Hispanic Health Research Institute (NHHRI), where she leads national strategy for communications, brand, partnerships, and visibility in support of community-powered research. In this role, she oversees storytelling, digital engagement, media relations, and partner communications, helping translate complex research and data into clear, compelling narratives that center community voice and impact.

With more than 15 years of experience in journalism, public relations, and nonprofit communications, Fernanda has held senior leadership roles at national organizations including the National Hispanic Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and mission-driven communications firms serving health, policy, and social justice causes. Her work sits at the intersection of research, equity, and public engagement, with a focus on making systems more accountable to the communities they aim to serve.

She earned her Master’s degree in Media, Communication and Development from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (London, U.K.), where she gained a global, multidisciplinary perspective on the role of strategic communication in advancing social change. Her studies combined development theory, political economy, and research methods with the practical application of media and advocacy in international contexts. The experience strengthened her commitment to using storytelling, data, and culturally grounded messaging to influence public policy, build institutional trust, and improve health equity. This foundation continues to shape her leadership in national initiatives, including the creation and positioning of the National Hispanic Health Research Institute and her work advancing community-powered research through high-impact communications.

A bilingual communications strategist and trusted advisor, Fernanda brings a deep commitment to equity, narrative change, and institutional accountability. Through her leadership at NHHRI, she is helping build the infrastructure, platforms, and partnerships needed to elevate community-centered research and strengthen its influence on national health outcomes.
